The 100th anniversary of the first eurythmy performance of the Foundation Stone Meditation on April 20th, 2024 in Sheffield

Dear Eurythmy Colleagues,

When I was at the Michaelmas Conference in Dornach last September 2023, I learned from eurythmy colleagues that the Foundation Stone Meditation was first performed at Easter 1924. This inspired me to ask the Council of ASinGB and RMT if they would support a conference for members and eurythmists to celebrate 100 years of the Foundation Stone Meditation in eurythmy. The response was enthusiastic! So, this one-day conference will take place 10.00 – 5.30 on Saturday, April 20th at the Merlin Theatre in Sheffield.

Adrian Locher, speaker and Council member, has stepped in as co-carrier and has been immensely helpful, as has Aonghus Gordon and his team at the Brantwood School. We decided to place this event in the middle of the UK to encourage those from the north, south, east, and west to attend. The Merlin Theatre has a fine stage and Thomas Stott, lighter and eurythmist, is upgrading the lighting and putting up special curtains so the performance, which closes the day, and the demonstrations will be a especially festive and beautiful.

We hoped that all the groups who are performing the Foundation Stone Meditation would be represented on this day. As it turns out, two groups: Eurythmy West Midlands and the Northern Foundation Stone Group will perform and Diana Constantin from the London Eurythmy Group and Maurice Manning from the Scottish Foundation Stone Group will give workshops. As well, Jonathan Reid, guest performer with London Group, and Mary Watson from the Northern Group will lead short lecture-demonstrations.

We feel the Foundation Stone Meditation in eurythmy is the apotheosis of what eurythmy can achieve in terms of bringing the human soul to visibility. We hope that through such a conference, we can make the Foundation Stone Meditation in eurythmy more accessible to the members of the Anthroposophical Society. I am counting on all the eurythmists who will be present to interact with the members and help them understand what eurythmy and the arts can contribute to their inner work. And perhaps we can also learn from the members how we as artists can better serve the membership.

With this in mind, we would like to extend a special invitation to every eurythmist and speaker in the UK to come and celebrate this joyous event with us! Registration details can be found on the ASinGB website under Events. Click on ‘The Foundation Stone Meditation Made Visible’. It’s our hope that this occasion will encourage new steps forward for both eurythmy and members through the Foundation Stone Meditation.

Warm greetings, Coralee Frederickson and Adrian Locher
